The participants learn about healthy eating and increasing their physical activity in a classroom setting, that meets weekly for 16 weeks, one-hour sessions, followed by 6 monthly sessions. The DPP showed that people who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay the disease by losing a modest amount of weight through lifestyle changes.

Depending on the situation, insurance and providers’ preferences, participants may meet with a diabetes educator several times, individually.
