Medical Center
At Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, we offer state-of-the-art cancer treatment, right here in Ogdensburg. At the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center, we offer a number of cancer-fighting therapies. And our work has been recognized by a number of national organizations.
The Winter Cancer Center is the only cancer program in the region recognized for exceptional, collaborative cancer care by both the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (CoC) and the American College of Radiology. In addition, the Winter Cancer Center has received a three-year accreditation and designation as a Center of Excellence by the CoC. Only 1 in 4 hospitals in the United States is accredited by the CoC.
Specialized cancer care services include:
Coming to the Winter Cancer Center means getting the right treatments at the right time by skilled practitioners who care about you.
Radiation therapy uses tightly controlled beams of radiation to treat a wide variety of cancers without surgery. It requires highly precise technology—like the Trilogy linear accelerator, which is just one of the many powerful tools available here at Claxton-Hepburn.
Trilogy is a revolutionary image-guided radiotherapy system that combines diagnostic-quality imaging and treatment technology into one remarkable device. Trilogy provides truly individualized radiotherapy care with down-to-the-millimeter accuracy. This precision allows us to target just the tumor, sparing healthy tissue, and leading to quicker treatments.
We also offer intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). This treatment delivers high doses of radiation directly to tumors and cancer cells while protecting surrounding organs and tissues. The Winter Cancer Center is the only radiation oncology facility between Syracuse and Burlington to offer stereotactic radiosurgery, IMRT, and chemotherapy under one roof. And with our Trilogy linear accelerator, we can treat more cancers in a shorter amount of time.
As a full-service cancer center, we offer a number of different treatments to fight your cancer. Many of these treatments are delivered in our infusion area. We have 11 infusion stations that overlook a meditation garden. Chemotherapy, biotherapy, and the newest classifications of anti-cancer drugs are administered while patients relax with their choice of music, television, or socialization. A quiet room is available for patients who desire privacy.
The physicians at the Winter Cancer Center maintain close ties with major comprehensive cancer centers in Buffalo, Burlington, and Syracuse. They stay up-to-date on cancer treatment techniques and oncology research.
Our teams collaborate at the cancer center too. Our radiation oncologist and medical physicist work closely, using a state-of-the-art system to design treatment plans individualized to each patient. This ensures that the correct therapy will be delivered to the prescribed area by our therapy team.
Along with our physicians, our certified oncology nurses provide physical, emotional and educational support to patients and their families. Our nurses also administer chemotherapy and biotherapy, and they assess patients who are receiving radiation therapy.
Our staff includes a full-time patient navigator/social worker who assists with financial issues, decision making, and coping with the psychosocial effects of cancer.
From our physicians to our support staff, we at the Winter Cancer Center are dedicated to providing our patients the very best in cancer care.
