October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Pink Ribbon Committee is hosting a series of events throughout the month to raise awareness about breast cancer. The Medical Center is holding a pink ribbon merchandise basket raffle, with the proceeds to benefit the Gouverneur Breast Cancer Fund. Tickets are $2 each of three for $5 and can be purchased at the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center or the Claxton-Hepburn Breast Health Center at the Connection for Women. The winner will be drawn on October 20, National Mammography Day.
On National Mammography Day, staff from the Breast Health Center and Winter Cancer Center will be in the Medical Center’s Cornerstone café from 1 to 3:00 p.m. serving pink ribbon cookies and punch and passing out pink ribbon pens and water bottles. Staff from the St. Lawrence County Cancer Services Program and Gouverneur Breast Cancer Walk Fund will be on hand passing out information on their services. The public is welcome to attend. All staff will be asked to “go pink” for breast cancer on this day as well.
Throughout the month, women getting their mammograms will receive a special rose, compliments of Dr. Ali Gharagozloo, medical director of imaging services at the Medical Center. There will also be an informational display of breast cancer information that will move around the campus throughout the month.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. Most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.
