Claxton-Hepburn Medical joined the National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (February 26 to March 4) campaign (#NEDAwareness) to shine the spotlight on eating disorders by educating the public. Spreading the message of hope and putting life-saving resources into the hands of those in need.

Allison Felt, a registered dietitian at Claxton-Hepburn, stated, “At least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States.” She continued, “There is a common view held by many people that eating disorders are lifestyle choices, when in fact they are serious and often fatal illnesses that can cause severe disturbances to a person’s eating behaviors.” People often have obsessions with food, body weight, and distorted body image. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder. Ms. Felt stated, “The most common know eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. “ Researchers are finding several factors that contribute to an eating disorder. These factors include genetic, biological, environmental, behavioral, psychological, and personality traits.

This year’s theme, “Let’s Get Real – NEDA,” is expanding the conversation about eating disorders and highlighting stories that we not often hear. By expanding conversations, busting myths, sharing resources, we can reach new audiences while sharing diverse stories of recovery.
