Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Offers Ostomy Support Group

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center offers an Ostomy Support Group that meets on the third Thursday of every month at 2:00 p.m. in the Lions Diabetes conference room located on the second floor of the Medical Center. The next meeting is February 20. The group is facilitated by Shannon VanHouse, RN, Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN). CWOCNs are specially trained to assist patients with ostomy care both in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

When undergoing ostomy surgery a person may experience anxiety and distress associated with the often sudden and significant alteration in elimination function and self-image. They may feel isolated. Our ostomy support group offers the opportunity to talk with others who have an ostomy. Current members may have a broader range of experience dealing with some of the problems that can be faced when first learning the skills necessary to manage the ostomy.

The meetings are open to everyone with ostomies or even those contemplating one. We also welcome any interested family members or friends. If you would like to speak with someone who has an ostomy, we have members who are willing to share their experience with you. For questions or more information, contact VanHouse at 315-713-5116. Your tomorrow is worth defending.
