Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center joined in the celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, 2018, by giving center stage to our volunteers and auxilianswith a breakfast buffet with all the trimmings. Ramona Kennedy, Claxton-Hepburn’s auxilian liaison and Lifeline program manager, stated, “This is an opportunity for us to recognize the integral role our volunteers play in advancing patient engagement and quality care.” Rondalyn Jacobs, the volunteer coordinator at Claxton-Hepburn, added, “Our volunteers are great ambassadors for the Medical Center. By offering a friendly smile, a helping hand, or a listening ear, they can make the visitors feel more relaxed in the medical environment.” She concluded, “This is just one of the many events we offer our volunteers throughout the year to show our appreciation for their dedication to the Medical Center.”

According to the Association for Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals, President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week with an executive order in 1974, as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Every sitting U.S. president since Nixon has proclaimed during National Volunteer Week (as have many U.S. mayors and governors). The week has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their communities. Every April, charities, hospitals, and communities recognize volunteers and foster a culture of service.
