Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Provides Talk on C-Diff for Clinical Staff

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Dr. Ahmad Kadhim, gastroenterologist & hepatologist, Tonya Brunet, RN, Infection Control Nurse, and Danny Sekhon, PharmD, recently collaborated to educate clinical staff on C. difficile colitis. This infection causes severe, persistent diarrhea. Discussed were prevention, clinical presentation, and treatment options; including fecal transplant.

Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT), also known as a stool transplant is used to treat the infection by reintroducing good bacteria into the colon. Dr. Kadhim performs the procedure via a colonoscope tube. FMT has been shown to be successful in more than 90 percent of cases. Research is also being conducted into FMT's usefulness in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
