When you're dealing with a life-threatening cardiology problem, such as a heart attack, a hospital is the best place to go for care. When you come to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center for cardiology care, we'll continue to help you, even when you leave the hospital.
The caring and knowledgeable staff at our Cardiac Rehabilitation Center can help you to build on what you learned while in the hospital. We can also help you to make vital lifestyle changes to delay or even avoid your next heart-related hospital trip.
Cardiac rehabilitation (or cardiac rehab) is a program made for people in recovery from a serious heart issue. Programs like this combine education, exercise, and emotional support to help deepen your understanding of how heart disease works and what you can do at home to help keep your heart healthy.
A cardiac rehab program cannot replace your connection with your cardiologist or your doctor. You'll still need to keep your appointments with your medical team, and you'll need to follow your discharge directions carefully.
But a cardiac rehab program could help you to become an active partner in your healing. And a program like this could help you to take the lifestyle steps your doctor recommends in order to avoid a future heart-health issue.
At Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, our program begins two to six weeks after you leave the hospital, and the entire program lasts for 12 weeks. You'll visit the center three times per week, and each session in our center will last for about an hour.
We offer heart-health education sessions, in both individual and group formats, that cover:
We also provide supervised exercise sessions. As you exercise, your electrocardiogram, blood pressure, and exercise tolerance will be monitored by the cardiac rehabilitation staff. Exercise is also supervised by an exercise specialist.
Through these exercise sessions, you'll learn how to use exercise as a tool for better health. And you'll have the opportunity to improve your health in a safe and structured environment.
Through your exercise, you can help to avoid future health problems, such as:
You don't have to be an athlete to participate in our exercise opportunities. We have four different levels of exercise available, and we can accommodate physical limitations too.
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center is on the first floor of Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, next to the physical therapy department. You'll need a referral from your physician to join the program. The cost of the program is usually covered by medical insurance. Contact your insurance company for more information about the extent of your coverage.
