The Richard E. Winter Cancer Center
The Richard E. Winter Cancer Center provides regional access to state-of-the-art cancer treatment. Since 1994, the center has offered medical and radiation oncology services conveniently housed under one roof. In 2004, the Cancer Center completed a multi-million dollar expansion to meet the growing needs of people in St. Lawrence County. The medical and radiation oncology departments are physically connected to the main hospital. This proximity provides convenient access to laboratory and radiology services, including CT, MRI, and PET (Positron Emission Tomography).
Cancer Care with Distinction
The Winter Cancer Center is the only cancer program in the region recognized by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (CoC) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) as offering the very best in cancer care. The center was recognized for providing quality, comprehensive cancer care with a team approach. The Winter Cancer Center has received a 3 year accreditation by the CoC with commendations recognizing it as a center of excellence. 1 in 4 hospitals in the U.S. are approved by the CoC. This 25% comprises a network of quality cancer programs that provides care to 80 percent of newly diagnosed patients.
Medical Oncology
Patients are treated in an infusion area with eleven stations in a comforting environment overlooking a meditation garden. Chemotherapy, biotherapy, and the newest classifications of anti-cancer drugs are administered while patients relax to their choice of music, television, or socialization. A quiet room is available for those patients who desire privacy.
Radiation Oncology
The Center's state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator provides a precise and effective way of delivering radiation therapy. Utilizing Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), higher doses of radiation can be delivered directly to tumors and cancer cells, while surrounding organs and tissues are protected. The Winter Cancer Treatment Center is the only radiation oncology site between Syracuse, and Burlington to offer IMRT SmartBeam Technology and chemotherapy under one roof.
Our Physicians
