  • Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Sponsors Diabetes Dinner Lecture

On January 17, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Program will be sponsoring a free dinner lecture at the Freight House, 20 Market St., Ogdensburg. Allison Felt, RD will begin the program by presenting “Tips for Eating Out.” Once dinner is served, Dr. Parth Chowdhuri, an internist at Claxton-Hepburn, will present “The ABC’s of Diabetes.” Registration is required by calling Karen Cole, Diabetes Education at 315-713-5181.   Seating is limited.

Diabetes is a disease that is primarily self-managed. It is important to learn how to understand what the goals are and what steps you can take to control the disease. Remembering the “ABCs of diabetes” can help to prevent or delay the onset of these serious diabetes complications:

A1C - For most people with diabetes, it is important to keep their A1C (average blood glucose level over 2 or 3 months) less than 7 percent.
Blood Pressure - People with diabetes should have a target blood pressure of less than 130/80 mmHg.
Cholesterol - LDL (bad) cholesterol should be below 100 mg/dl; HDL (healthy) cholesterol should be above 40 mg/dl for men and 50 mg/dl for women; triglycerides should be below 150 mg/dl.

To learn more about why these goals are important and what you can do to reach them, plan on attending this free program.
