Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic

Position Summary: Employees in this job maintain the hospital buildings in livable and workable condition relative to heat, light, power, air conditioning, and other broad environmental factors and systems. Perform a variety of general, mechanical, and preventative maintenance functions to include inspections, service, repair and maintenance, and overhaul of mechanical equipment, electrical and HVAC systems, and renovate and/or construct components of the physical plant facilities of the hospital and properties. The employee generally performs work in a shop or mechanical room area, in the hospital interior, as well as exterior in varying weather and environmental surroundings. Tasks involve standing for extended periods, using both hands in operations, climbing ladders, bending, reaching, kneeling, and carrying of equipment, tools and other heavy objects. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials. Workers may lift and move materials up to 40 lbs., unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Employees are exposed to moderate to high noise levels from operating machinery, high temperatures from boiler plant operations, and cold winter weather conditions. Employees work in a hospital environment where there is a possible exposure to infectious diseases. Employees in this position are subject to 24-hour call-in in the event of an emergency. Rotation into evening shifts, weekend shifts, and on-call shifts are also required.
Qualifications: Trade, vocational, or high school graduate required. Associates Degree in Facilities Maintenance/or related field preferred. A minimum of three to five years of progressively complex maintenance experience with preference in a Health Care Facility. Knowledge of the accepted practices, processes, materials, and tools of the maintenance trades; Knowledge of electric motors, generators, pumps, pressure systems, water systems, and other equipment and systems found in a hospital building, as well as knowledge of the servicing and maintenance of simple power, heating, and cooling units. Documented experience in several of the maintenance trades required, construction, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC Technology. Driver’s license required. Near visual acuity for reading blueprints and specifications.
